You got the right idea in the intro and I love this idea (it reminds me of some atmospheres from certain SNES games), but the track needs more percussion/instrument dynamics to drive it as it gets slightly repetitive at certain points; however, the pluck at the end of the intro part sounded nice. The build up was pretty suspenseful even without a technical riser (proof that you don't need a generic snare build up :D ).

The drop is lacking a good sub-bass to back the sounds you created. Referring to Nightmare, you could hear the sub that backs it.. It would be a little different for a dubstep track because my sub bass was side-chained and constant throughout the drop (partially why complextro is a little easier than other bpm dubstep). Subs can be used effectively to emphasize certain sounds more or just to back the entire mix. You also want to ensure that something is happening in a drop at all times as well as making sure that you vary the sounds more. Each sound should bridge into the next one and therefore, flow. The drums don't have that much power in the mix in my opinion; however, that could just be me.

I think the bridge between the first and second drop could have had more. It should prepare the listener for the second drop by slowing down the intensity a little and slowly bringing it back up again. The bridge could have been introduced with a new melody first and then the part leading to the silence (and the eventual drop).

The second drop was kind of enjoyable. I suggest you keep practicing sound design and look into new ways to utilize Massive. Personally, I prefer Serum and find it much easier. I will eventually do more research on Massive too though. It doesn't matter what synth you use, but how you use it affects the quality and complexity of the song.

I have a lot of projects with random sound design that I scrapped because I believed it sounded either too generic or just ugly. Nightmare was the first track with 100% synth sound design and also the first track I finished without questioning whether it was good enough.

There is so much potential when you have a synth like Massive and I am sure you will come up with great things in the future with time!!!

If you have anymore questions, just let me know!

Wow, thanks for that epic review and awesome pointers! Everything you said made sense, except I don't exactly know what side-chaining is... I totally agree with you in needing a sub bass now. I sort of overlooked that in production cause I thought it was already super "bassy". I also have made some other dubstep songs that are much different from this. They are much more typical and un-original sounding. With this song, I decided to take a gamble with something very different than what I've made or what I listen to. I think it turned out well though. Thank you again for so many tips and ideas to improve on.

Sounds like you recorded it with your phone.. You should try to figure out why.

Sounds okay otherwise.. Quite accurate :)

ZayMajic responds:

Well it was made on mobile..

Quite dark; feels like it is missing something, but that could be just me.

Nice work

sYrge responds:

Yeah, this isn't really my favorite thing I've made either. first of all, it has no second drop, so it's really short and insignificant feeling. To be honest, I was kind of just eager to finish the EP and upload it and be done with it.
I see what you mean, though.

What an interesting style; the snare and clap kind of seem to be battling each other which is just bad in the mix.

Maybe the snare is just too aggressive. Other than that, nicely done.

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

The snare and the clap are both claps xD they are completely different samples and I have them so they don't play over each other (alternating) and thanks for the review Bradley ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You said you wanted to see if it was good enough for movies and games. Try it yourself in a small project :D

It is pretty good.

Modnex responds:

Thanks Chael! Will definitely try :P

I will review your track when you wake up....

JK, I love this! The mixing is effective, the melodies make me want to sleep (in the most positive way possible) and everything works well together.

Awesome job!

WillSolace responds:

Thank you

Sounds like a melodic rattle of a rattle snake.

The drops are not very effective and everything is rather strange. The first part is fine until what seems to be wind blowing into the mic comes in.

Then the hats in the drop are way too loud, and the sounds just don't work.

What I recommend you do is just make more tracks and keep learning new knowledge in synthesis, mixing or composition. Because if you keep working on this one track, it doesn't make you better faster as much as having experience with a lot of new tracks.

BlueAlpha14 responds:

That's EXACTLY what I was going for. I wanted to remind people of a rattle snake the same way I was reminded of a viper listening to F-777's track.

The drop didn't use near as much automation as normal dubstep, so that's probably why. This is actually going to be last dubstep for a bit.

I knew someone would comment on the drums. In some cases they had to be loud.

I try to do homework as much as I can. This was actually going to be just a test but I evolved it into a full track.

Thank you for the review and I hope you can listen to my future stuff!

Nail the drop... and this will be epic

Applesnitch responds:

Thanks! The drop is the most epic part! It's my new sub-genre of dubstep, StutterStep! Thanks for checking it out! The full version will be out on June 14th! Be sure to hear it!

Seems to work :)

Nice to see art from Antitone too lol

Delcherro responds:

What do you mean by "seems to work?"
And yeah I've been in touch with him. XD

The piano was really interesting in this one, for sure.

The impacts/ down-sweeps kind of upstage the drops though

optimize responds:

Ok. Thnx
