Could use a melody or 2 at the intro or some spoopy brasses.

After that, wow... sick melody!

Oh so this is what Melbourne bounce is. Anyway, the sounds could be a little cleaner and so can the mix but this is overall sick!

UbiMusic responds:

Thx for the feedback. Normally in Melbourne Bounce the intro is just drums btw, but I hear what you mean about everything else. I don't plan on making more MB though, as it's just not as fun to me as edm and dubstep.

The plucks at the beginning sounded amazing; I thought I would give it more stars, but there are some mistakes. The drop occurs off beat for some reason, but there are more ways that it can be improved. The pitch of the drop is too different from the melodies at the beginning and the build up, so you need to watch out for that in your tracks (I made that mistake before once). The drop also has almost no impact which can be achieved with better mixing.

I have almost never seen a build up take place instantly after a drop, but in this case it made no sense. I believe the chorus/drop was too long in the beginning and there was not enough time for the track to bridge into a second verse/ escalate again into the second drop.

The coin sound doesn't really sit well in the mix and could use some enhancements I guess.

The final impact at 2:46 (roughly) is just random in my opinion because it doesn't even let the melody finish. It sounds off beat like the drop.

To summarize, this track is just rather repetitive and needs bit more variation. The composition needs work, but it is not bad enough to go under 3 stars.

This is definitely alright, so keep up the good work.

P.S. this is house and not really dance.

Sounds quite peaceful, but maybe could use some more variation in the percussion. You nailed the bass for sure, and I can't complain about much else.

Good job and good luck in the contest!

I honestly don't know what people are complaining about. You said it yourself that people asked for this..

Personally, I think this style might go really well with some orchestral later on, if you return to orchestral dubstep; however, keep experimenting as well. Your content keeps getting more and more interesting and unique.

I am just happy that you have been uploading recently!! I am sure you had a lot of fun with this mix; that is a crucial part of music production and Chemical Rage is definitely fun to listen to ;)

I never actually considered disabling the grid system... I wonder..

You got the right idea in the intro and I love this idea (it reminds me of some atmospheres from certain SNES games), but the track needs more percussion/instrument dynamics to drive it as it gets slightly repetitive at certain points; however, the pluck at the end of the intro part sounded nice. The build up was pretty suspenseful even without a technical riser (proof that you don't need a generic snare build up :D ).

The drop is lacking a good sub-bass to back the sounds you created. Referring to Nightmare, you could hear the sub that backs it.. It would be a little different for a dubstep track because my sub bass was side-chained and constant throughout the drop (partially why complextro is a little easier than other bpm dubstep). Subs can be used effectively to emphasize certain sounds more or just to back the entire mix. You also want to ensure that something is happening in a drop at all times as well as making sure that you vary the sounds more. Each sound should bridge into the next one and therefore, flow. The drums don't have that much power in the mix in my opinion; however, that could just be me.

I think the bridge between the first and second drop could have had more. It should prepare the listener for the second drop by slowing down the intensity a little and slowly bringing it back up again. The bridge could have been introduced with a new melody first and then the part leading to the silence (and the eventual drop).

The second drop was kind of enjoyable. I suggest you keep practicing sound design and look into new ways to utilize Massive. Personally, I prefer Serum and find it much easier. I will eventually do more research on Massive too though. It doesn't matter what synth you use, but how you use it affects the quality and complexity of the song.

I have a lot of projects with random sound design that I scrapped because I believed it sounded either too generic or just ugly. Nightmare was the first track with 100% synth sound design and also the first track I finished without questioning whether it was good enough.

There is so much potential when you have a synth like Massive and I am sure you will come up with great things in the future with time!!!

If you have anymore questions, just let me know!

Gravidi responds:

Wow, thanks for that epic review and awesome pointers! Everything you said made sense, except I don't exactly know what side-chaining is... I totally agree with you in needing a sub bass now. I sort of overlooked that in production cause I thought it was already super "bassy". I also have made some other dubstep songs that are much different from this. They are much more typical and un-original sounding. With this song, I decided to take a gamble with something very different than what I've made or what I listen to. I think it turned out well though. Thank you again for so many tips and ideas to improve on.

Could use some work. Since you are technically trying to make it as accurate as possible, I think that part was successful. I would recommend that besides a pitch change, you should try to add more of a personal spin to tracks that you remix.

The mix could be a little better; however, overall it is hard to say this is bad. It's not bad at all. The only thing off about the project otherwise is that it sounds a little rough. Improvement on that aspect of music comes through practice.

Nice work.

Sounds like you recorded it with your phone.. You should try to figure out why.

Sounds okay otherwise.. Quite accurate :)

ZayMajic responds:

Well it was made on mobile..

Quite dark; feels like it is missing something, but that could be just me.

Nice work

sYrge responds:

Yeah, this isn't really my favorite thing I've made either. first of all, it has no second drop, so it's really short and insignificant feeling. To be honest, I was kind of just eager to finish the EP and upload it and be done with it.
I see what you mean, though.

Donkey Country is definitely one of my childhood favorites; all three of them actually. I felt this remix was accurate but lacked potential power that could have been addressed with bass. Some hats were a little loud as well.

I think I will consider remixing this as well :D

What an interesting style; the snare and clap kind of seem to be battling each other which is just bad in the mix.

Maybe the snare is just too aggressive. Other than that, nicely done.

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

The snare and the clap are both claps xD they are completely different samples and I have them so they don't play over each other (alternating) and thanks for the review Bradley ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
